ANTI SNORING / SLEEP APNEA
Anti-Snoring / Sleep Apnea Devices
Snoring occurs when the soft tissue in the back of the throat blocks the airway. There are about 90 million Americans who snore. And while for some, snoring is nothing more than a minor annoyance, there are also many habitual snorers who are at risk of serious health issues, such as:
- Long interruptions of breathing
- Lack of sleep
- Strain on the heart
- High blood pressure
- Heart enlargement
- Low oxygen levels in the blood which could lead to pulmonary hypertension
- Chronic headaches
- Heart Attack
Snoring can be managed in a number of ways – from home remedies to expensive machines such as the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) devices. There are also specially designed mouthpieces that are found to be effective in preventing snoring.
The anti–snoring and sleep apnea devices used at Tall Pines Dentistry are FDA approved, and can be an excellent alternative to the more expensive CPAP machines. The device consists of an upper and lower thin acrylic guards, that hook together to hold the lower jaw forward. Holding the lower jaw forward is how the airway remains open, thereby eliminating snoring.
