Implants are a conservative approach to replacement of missing teeth, because it does not involve adjacent teeth, unlike fixed and removable bridges.
Implants are pure titanium threaded screws expressly designed for dental use. A small incision is made in the gum tissue, and a small diameter preparation is carefully drilled into the the maxilla (upper jaw) or the mandible (lower jaw). After the dental implant is threaded into place, the area is left to heal for 3to 4 months. Most patients report no pain, only occasional minor discomfort relieved by ibuprofen, Tylenol or aspirin. After healing, an impression is made, and the abutment and crown are placed completing the procedure.
Dental implants are an excellent method to replace missing teeth, and a wonderful alternative to removable dentures.
