Teeth whitening, also known as bleaching, is a cosmetic dental treatment to whiten the tooth enamel. Teeth can become discolored due to a number of reasons. Drinking coffee, tea or red wine can darken the teeth. The same is true for medications such as tetracycline. As people age, the outer layer of the tooth enamel also gets thinner, making the dentin (a natural yellow tissue of the teeth) visible. Whitening the teeth can dramatically improve the appearance of your smile and make you look younger.
The bleaching process utilizes peroxide gel that is added to a tray and fitted around your teeth. There are 2 types of teeth whitening: in-office and at-home whitening. Both are available in our office.
The type of teeth whitening solution that Dr.Roberts will recommend depends on the staining/discoloration, how soon you want to see the results, as well as your budget. For teeth stains caused by medications, the best option is in-office deep bleaching. It’s also recommended if you want to see fast results. With this treatment, Dr. Roberts will first apply a protective cream over the gums and soft tissues, and then apply the whitening gel. Laser may be used to quicken the whitening process. Your teeth will be several shades lighter in just one visit; however, you may need more than a single visit depending on your desired results.
At-home whitening, on the other hand, makes use of a teeth whitening kit. This option may require 10 to 15 treatments, which means the results will take longer compared to in-office whitening. However, it’s a cost-effective treatment compared to in-office bleaching. The kit comes with a 10% carbamide peroxide solution and a custom tray (mouth guard).
Once you have achieved the results you wanted, we highly recommend that you do a touch-up 1-2x a year so you can maintain your gorgeous smile.
